However, one should be aware that the main deity of a yidam yoga group cultivation (本尊法同修主尊) — for example, at LSCTT, where the sadhanas of the eight principal yidam deities of TBS (真佛宗八大本尊) are practiced on a rotating basis — may not necessarily be a practitioner’s personal yidam deity (個人本尊). In the 1990s, when the earliest TBS sadhanas were translated, personal computers and the internet were not yet widely available, making it more difficult to research translation terminology. With the spread of Tibetan Buddhism in the West over the past 30+ years, the concept of “yidam” has since become more familiar to Western practitioners, and the transition from “personal deity” (also translated back then as meditational deity or tutelary deity in external texts) to using “yidam” simply reflects both cultural evolution and today’s accessibility of information.
